Unable to Log In to cPanel or WHM? Common Causes and Fixes

When you are unable to access your cPanel or WebHost Manager (WHM) account, it is typically caused by incorrect login credentials, local IP address blocks triggered by security firewalls, or browser/network connectivity issues.

This guide outlines the most common causes for login failures and step-by-step methods to resolve them quickly.

Step 1: Verify Your Credentials and Login URL

Before attempting advanced troubleshooting, ensure you are using the correct port and login URL for your service:

  • cPanel Access: (https://yourdomain.co.uk:2083) (or https://yourdomain.co.uk/cpanel)
  • WHM Access: (https://yourdomain.co.uk:2087) (or https://yourdomain.co.uk/whm)

Checking Credentials:

  • Username: cPanel usernames are case-sensitive.
  • Password: Check for accidental spaces pasted into the password field.
  • Alternative Login: If you cannot remember your password, log into your web hosting client portal and use the direct single sign-on (SSO) button to access cPanel automatically.

Step 2: Check for Server Firewall & IP Address Blocks

Repeated failed login attempts, incorrect FTP passwords, or excessive connections can cause our automated server firewall (e.g., Imunify) to temporarily block your local IP address.

How to Identify an IP Block:

  • The login page times out completely or displays a “Connection Timed Out” / “This site can’t be reached” error.
  • The login page loads fine on a mobile device using cellular data, but fails on your local office/home Wi-Fi network.

How to Resolve an IP Block:

  1. Visit a site like whatismyip.com to find your public IPv4 address.
  2. Restart your internet router to request a new dynamic IP address from your ISP.
  3. Switch networks (e.g., connect via a mobile hotspot) to test access.
  4. If the issue persists, open a support ticket with your public IP address so our engineers can check and unblock it in the firewall if found.

Step 3: Clear Browser Cache or Try Private/Incognito Mode

Corrupted browser cookies or stale SSL session tokens can prevent successful authentication.

  1. Open a new Incognito / Private Browsing window.
  2. Attempt to log into cPanel/WHM again.
  3. If successful, clear your browser’s cache and cookies for your domain.

Step 4: Check Service and Network Port Status

If the page fails to load across multiple networks, local network restrictions or server maintenance may be the cause:

  • Local Firewall / Port Blocks: Some corporate or public Wi-Fi networks block non-standard web ports like :2083 or :2087. Try accessing cPanel via the proxy URL format instead: (https://cpanel.yourdomain.co.uk).
  • Server Status: Check our status page or contact support to verify if scheduled maintenance or service restarts are currently taking place on your server.

When to Contact Support

If you have verified your credentials, tested on a different network, and cleared your browser cache but still cannot log in, please submit a support ticket including:

  • Your domain name and cPanel username.
  • Your current public IP address.
  • A screenshot of any specific error message displayed on your screen.
