Domain Registration Corrections and Renaming Limitations

Overview

If you’ve registered a domain with a spelling mistake or typo, unfortunately it is not possible to rename or modify a domain name once it has been registered. This is a technical limitation at the registrar level and applies to all domain registrars worldwide.

Why Domain Names Cannot Be Renamed

When a domain is registered, it is entered into a global registry database managed by the relevant domain authority (such as Verisign for .com or Nominet for .co.uk). The domain name itself is the unique identifier — there is no “rename” function in the registry system. A domain can only be registered, transferred, or deleted — not edited.

What Are Your Options?

Option 1: Register the Correct Domain

The standard resolution is to register the correctly spelled domain name. You can then:

• Set up your website and services on the new domain
• Redirect the incorrectly spelled domain to the correct one (if you wish to keep it)
• Let the incorrect domain expire at the end of its registration period, or cancel it early if your registrar supports early cancellation

Option 2: Keep Both Domains

Some customers choose to keep both domains — particularly if the misspelled version is commonly mistyped by visitors. You can point both domains to the same hosting account and set up a redirect from the incorrect domain to the correct one.

What Happens to DNS Records and Services When a Domain Is Cancelled?

If you choose to cancel or let the incorrect domain expire, please be aware of the following:

• All DNS records associated with the domain will be removed
• Any email addresses using that domain will stop working
• Any websites or services pointed to that domain will become unreachable via that address
• SSL certificates issued for that domain will become invalid

Make sure all services have been fully migrated to the new domain before allowing the old one to expire.
